Transactional Analysis

The concepts of Transactional Analysis were established in the early 50's and have been refined and reviewed ever since. It was initially developed by the psychologist Eric Berne, who wished to derive a public language of understanding by which psychological phenomena could be discussed.

Berne suggests that there are three core 'ego states' resident in anyone over five years of age. In an adult, a regression to a child like state, or a parroting of parental edicts are not a throwback as such, but are derived from a brain state that was formed before the mind had the critical faculties to filter its input.

An understanding of these core states will give the therapist valuable insight into the minds and behavioural patterns of any patient. They will also give some feedback on how you may be being perceived by your patients.
